Vanishing Vermont: Wells Lamson Quarry

Things a been a bit of a whirlwind for me the last two weeks. So I apologize for not getting a post up last week. I was teaching at Art-Is-You, in Stamford CT. Which was an amazing adventure of its own. Don't worry, I am going to share photos and insights from that event in the next few days.

But right now, I want to focus on a my day today. On a tip from a friend and fellow artist, I drove down to East Barre (right on the Websterville boarder) to visit the abandoned Wells Lamson Quarry. Barre's history is rich with stories of immigrants workers and industrialization. New England quarries are know for their consistent quality and significant deposits of raw materials. These photos I am sharing with you are just the beginning of the shots that I took today. This is the location of the oldest Granite Quarry in the US. crumble and waste away. I was completely taken in by the beauty of the site. The thing that strikes me the most about this location is how changed the landscape now is because of human interaction. I don't know all the details, but my understanding is that there are organizations out there that are trying to conserve the land and keep alive the historical importance of this place.


Look around and you will see that our natural world has be transformed by industry. Where industry has been, there seems to be significant marks upon the land. In this case, Nature is trying to take back what belongs to her. Today was a very fruitful day and inspiring too. I will continue to edit my photos and post them. Hopefully I will learn a bit more about Barre's granite history and share with you those important nuggets as well.

This place was a space of labor and livelihood for many men for over 100 years. I am sure if the rocks could talk they would have amazing stories to tell. Up on the hill, in the light drizzle, on a Sunday afternoon, there was something magical, yet uncanny there. The birds where chirping, flying in and out of the trees and I could swear in the silences I could hear the faint echoes of men working down in the depths of those pits: Machinery buzzing and clanking away.

Ghost Stories

Well, to say this summer has been a whirlwind is an understatement. I can't believe it's August already. Where has the time gone? I know a lot of my time has been invested with work, family and school. Just about a week ago, I was taking down a semester's worth a work at Vermont College of Fine Arts exhibit space, lovingly called "the ARK." I was really pleased with the feedback the faculty and the visiting "critters" had to give. So now, with one whole semester behind me, I can move into semester #2 of a 4 semester journey through graduate school.

This semester I will be focusing all of time and energy into researching ghosts and hauntings. Text and articles to read have been piling up on my desk. Movies to watch are queuing up. The purpose of this research is to better understand what it means for something to be "haunted." What makes a ghost, a ghost? How is it that some people see then and some people don't? Why do spaces and places, like old houses, cemeteries and abandoned buildings fill some people with dread and horror, when other people go hunting for spirits and spectral evidence?  These are just a few examples of the ideas that I am exploring.

One of my projects will be to document abandoned spaces and those places considered ghostly or haunted through photography and video. Last weekend I went out looking at some old sites and I thought you might be interested in see what I uncovered...

Ghost Stories Assemblage Class this SATURDAY 10/29.

If you didn't get a chance to take my Assemblage classes @ Art-Is-You, you can catch it ONE last time @ Artist's Medium, here in beautiful Williston, VT. 

Space is limited. Registration closes @ the end of the day tomorrow, so don't delay. This is probably the last time that I will be teaching this workshop in a while.

Whether it’s an old family photo or a piece of old lace; we’ve all felt the presence of someone long gone when we encounter their things - the imprint they leave behind after possessing an object for a long period of time. These objects once had owners. They were bought and sold, made and broken. Some of them were kept and treasured, while others were forgotten in attics.

Each has a story to tell. This workshop will teach you the basics needed to construct a box assemblage that speaks the ghost stories of the past.

Supply List

DON'T FREAK OUT OVER THE SUPPLY LIST- BRING WHAT YOU HAVE. There will be plenty to share.

A hinged box, like a cigarbox, jewelry box,  small doll truck (as seen to left) Doesn't need to be fancy. You can even by an unfinished one @ AC Moore or Michael's.

Found objects: examples: clock parts, gears, typewriter parts, small figurines, dolls parts, game pieces, toys, household items, scraps of fabric, jewelry bits, picture frames, etc. Bring what you have... clean out a junk drawer or a corner of your attic...

Old photos: originals or good quality color copies

Paper of any and all kind scrap booking papers, old ephemera,

Paint brushes to use for paint and for glue

Matte Gel Medium

Craft knife with fresh blades

Pencil

Acrylic paints of your choice and color.

Various other favorite drawing supplies: ie, colored pencils, markers, oil pastels, etc…

I will supply:

Additional found objects, frames, rusty bits, etc.  

Strong glue like E6000

Other Adhesives

Some paints: black, white, van dyke brown

Additional paper, images and ephemera

Wire

Other tools: hammer, drill, dremel, etc

Screws, nails and other bits

Ghost Stories: Opening Reception Sunday October 2nd

I just got home from Stowe, where I finished hanging my show:
Ghost Stories at the Thompson Gallery, inside the Black Cap Coffee Roasters. The building that the coffee shop is in is really old and has lots of funky charm. The walls in the gallery space are not quite straight and the floor slopes a little here and there. That's what I really love about the room.  It's narrow, crooked nature. It's almost like you are in Alice in Wonderland. My pieces, fit right in perfectly. 

Plus to be honest, I think there might be a spirit or two hanging around (and I don't mean the ones in my art work, either.) You will have to come by and check it out for yourself.


The wonderfully talented Natasha Bogar helped me hang it all and we were done in record time. I am really looking forward to the opening reception on Sunday. Hope to see you there!
