Lorraine Reynolds and Beth Gilmore’s American Gothic bridges the distance between past and present, north and south, Reynolds and Gilmore have assembled mixed media work using alternative printmaking and painting processes that speak to the viewer thorough nostalgia and memory, melding a collective past and visions of haunted tales.

The Art Hop is coming! The Art Hop is coming!

Yes, the 20th ART HOP is ALMOST here!

Now in its 20th year, the ART HOP presented by SEABA (South End Art and Business Association) is Vermont's largest most remarkable annual exhibition of visual art. I am so excited about being a part of this perennial art extravaganza
.
This three day event occurs during the weekend following the Labor Day holiday. It attracts over 30,000 visitors, which says a lot, especially when you consider that the population of Burlington is only 42,000 people! 500 participating artists partner with locale business and galleried in the South End to celebrating this unique cultural event.

Hope Blossoms with be featured in this show. I am very proud to announce that piece won 2nd place in the juried book arts show: UNBOUND v.II @ the Artistree Gallery in Woodstock, VT.

Speaking of the Artistree Gallery. Adrian Tan asked me to create an outdoor "mini-installation" in a mail box for their upcoming show: POST OBSOLESCENCE. My new piece: bring the boys back home, has twist together nostalgia and metaphor. The show opens tomorrow, Thursday August 23rd. 6pm.

Artists have created interior "installations" within standard rural mailboxes leaving the exterior unadorned. The mail boxes have then been mounted along a walking trail loop on the gallery hillside. This event marks one of the last opportunities to view UNBOUND vol. II and is also an open house event at the community arts center.

Open House begins at 5pm with live music and light refreshments. Post-Obsolescence opens to the public at 6pm followed by the outdoor screening of the Andy Goldsworthy documentary "Rivers & Tides" on the lawn behind ArtisTree (bring a picnic dinner!)

ARTFEST 2012, updated teaching schedule and other news....

I can't believe I forgot to post this?!   I suppose there has been so much going on lately. Sometimes I think I would forget my head if it was not attached to my body.  My blog, definitely has Facebook envy, so I should give it a little more love, I know.

Here's the scoop.... I am teaching @ ARTFEST, in beautiful Port Townsend in 2012!!!

Can you tell, how excited I am. 

first- I am so in awe of Teesha Moore and everything she does. It is such an honor to be asked to teach at this amazing art retreat that she and Tracy put together every year. This is their 13th year!!

second- I have three terrific classes lined up....
Soul Houses
Books Unbound and... a brand new class.... Sailor's Valentines....
It's going to be so much fun to meet a new group of talented people and make art together!


third- I have never been to Washington state. I can't wait to get there and see everything the Seattle area has to offer.

There's a ton of stuff going on in the next two months, so stay tuned for all the updates to come....There's new classes in Williston @ Artist's Medium, The annual Art of Horror show  @ the SPACE gallery,  Art-Is-You in Danbury, CT, and a solo exhibition @ Black Cap Coffee roasters in Stowe (which opens next weekend!)

Just like Persephone, she gathers the sweetest flowers....keep watch over her, so she will not be swept away.

New WorK: Litany Against Fear: Collection Vessel

I've been working on this piece for a while, but now I am happy to say it is finished. It is currently taking up residence in my dining room but soon to be on display in Burlington.  

The idea for this started to incubate in my head last October. Little by little, I worked on it; adding objects here and there, searching for just the right something or some other thing to add. Unlike some of my work that can be very spontaneous, I could picture in my head exactly how I wanted this piece to look. It was just a matter of committing to the piece and finding the right materials. 

I have always been inspired by the Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear, that appears in Frank Herbert's book, Dune. I used those words as a starting point for this piece. The idea being to overcome your fear you need to let it past through you. Allow the storm of emotion to come forward, always remembering that the only this that is constant and the thing that will endure is yourself. That is how you tackle those things you fear the most.  Each of streamer's that float in the tree bears one line of the litany.

  

I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.  And when it has gone past, I will turn my inner eye to see its path. Where fear has gone there will be nothing. 

Only I will remain.

This piece speaks on many levels and I could go on and on about their meanings for me personally, but I feel it's really important to just let it speak for itself. I have plans on showing this and it's sister: Desire at the South End Art Hop in September. It is much more impressive in person, than in a photo.

When it is on display, I will ask viewers to people write down their fears and place them in the vessel. If you can't make it and you want your fear added, please feel free to leave me a comment on this blog post or email me directly. I would love to include it in the work.



And what of Desire? This piece is still sitting on the workroom table. After this morning treasure hunting (aka yard-sailing) I am very excited to get back to work later tonight. I will post more photos of her as she progresses.

Working and getting over a cold. That's what I have been doing since I can home from the gallery at 404 Pine Street after an energizing Art Hop Weekend, The Hop was great and really has motivated me to get into the workroom every night. My solo show at Seminary Arts in the Center is opening in about a month and I have tons of work to do!

Here's a little taste of the work that is going into the show.

This piece, I like to call, Captain O My Captain, I finished late last night.  When found the frame and the tintype at Whistle Stop Antiques I just fell in love with him. For months he sat on my worktable with a few other elements, waiting patiently for me to commit to him. Finally, something swept me up, and I started in on him with fervor. It's strange to me how things just are that way. That odd moment when something clicks and the work "just happens"

I'll be looking for some more of that inspiration to strike me tonight.  I'm working on a few more soul houses as well as a very large piece about nightmares. Time to get back to work.

Slow and Steady

In case you haven't heard, I'm doing a solo show in October at Seminary Arts in Waterbury Center. Many thanks to the wonderfully inspiring Mame McKee for allowing me to hang my work in her gallery.

So this means with the South End Art Hop a little more than a month away and the gallery show in two. I still have lots of work to do before I am in the home stretch.

I have been lucky to have my muse with me the last few months. Helping me have a clear vision of the pieces I want to create. This latest piece, finally entitled: Fortune Teller is almost completely done.  This is the largest piece I have finished to date- 24" tall, 17" across and 10" deep.

I stayed up, way too late last night finishing her dress. I am very grateful to have had some lovely light on the back porch this evening to take some pictures of her.

She still needs a few finishing touches, but now I can move on to some other things. More pictures to come as I complete more work for the upcoming shows.

Sorry for the delay, I know I promised. Here they are, almost a week late- photos of our Burton Employee art hop- with many thanks Tomas Ruprecht, for the great pix. The show this year was a great success, and many thanks goes out to all the artists and sponsors who helped make it happen! We had a great party with food from local eateries, ice cream courtesy of Ben and Jerry's, a live dance performance by the girls of Cheeks Dance company ( all I can say about them is WOWSERS!) music by Joshua Panda, and of course Magic Hat on tap.

So many people came out to support art in the South End of Burlington. I am blessed to have such wonderful friends and colleagues! Thanks everyone for your hard work and dedication to this project!
